Every breath a cow takes is a climate decision.
India has 303 million cattle. Each one exhales methane — a greenhouse gas 80× more potent than CO₂ over 20 years. Verdant Impact is turning this hidden climate crisis into a farmer-first opportunity.
India's livestock sector emits an estimated 11–13% of the country's total greenhouse gases — yet smallholder farmers who raise these animals receive no financial benefit for reducing emissions. Verdant's India Methane Mission changes that equation: every kg of methane reduced becomes a verified asset that pays the farmer directly.
Methane from livestock is India's
most underestimated climate problem.
Enteric fermentation — the natural digestive process in cattle — produces methane continuously. With 303 million cattle spread across India's rural heartland, this adds up to one of the largest single sources of agricultural greenhouse gas in the world.
India's national cattle herd across 28 states — exhaling ~9.2 million tonnes of enteric methane annually.
Cattle in India — the world's largest bovine population. Each animal produces 70–120 kg of enteric methane annually through routine digestion.
Share of global greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock sector — exceeding the total emissions from global aviation and shipping combined.
Estimated methane emitted annually by India's livestock sector. Achieving a 20% reduction is equivalent to removing millions of fossil fuel cars from Indian roads.
Revenue earned by India's 100+ million smallholder farmers for managing their animals' climate impact. Verdant's mission is to change this number permanently.
We built India's first farmer-first
livestock methane reduction system.
BlackCarbon AI is Verdant's integrated agri-climate platform. It combines precision feed science, AI-driven advisory, and community-level programme management to reduce methane at the herd level — and convert those reductions into verified climate assets.
Climate-Smart Feed Science
NAAND — our indigenous-breed-optimised cattle feed — is formulated to reduce enteric methane by 15–25% while improving milk productivity. Drought-resilient, affordable, and formulated for arid zones.
AI-Driven Livestock Advisory
Pashu AI delivers vernacular-language, real-time guidance on feeding schedules, herd health, and climate protocols — turning every smallholder farmer into a precision livestock manager.
Measurement, Reporting & Verification
Rigorous MRV protocols track methane reduction at the herd level. Our data infrastructure captures baseline emissions, intervention uptake, and verified reduction volumes for auditability.
Farmer Carbon Revenue
Verified methane reductions are converted into climate assets. Revenue flows directly to participating farmers and village-level community resilience funds as direct income.
Genomics for Low-Emission Herds
Verdant Genetix profiles India's indigenous cattle breeds — Gir, Rathi, Tharparkar — for methane efficiency and climate adaptability, amplifying low-emission traits across generations.
Community-Scale Mobilisation
Verdant works through women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Gram Panchayats, and pastoral leaders. Climate action is co-designed and owned by the communities it serves.
From farm gate to verified
climate asset — how it works.
The India Methane Mission is a structured three-year programme operating at herd, village, and district scale. Each phase builds on the last, creating a self-sustaining carbon-positive livestock economy.
Baseline & Enrolment
Each participating herd undergoes a structured baseline assessment — animal count, breed, current feed, productivity, and estimated baseline methane emission per animal. Farmers are onboarded onto Pashu AI and receive a digital herd identity card.
Intervention & Monitoring
NAAND climate-formulated feed is introduced progressively. Feeding protocols are monitored via Pashu AI. Herd health data is captured continuously through digital health diagnostics. Methane proxy indicators are tracked at herd level using validated methodologies.
Verification & Credit Issuance
Accumulated MRV data is compiled, third-party verified, and used to calculate verified methane reduction volumes. Climate asset certificates are issued. The first tranche of farmer carbon revenue is distributed to enrolled households and community funds.
Scale & Self-Sustainability
Carbon revenue is reinvested in community feed procurement and village-level buffer stocks. Programme expands to neighbouring panchayats organically. The model becomes self-financing with zero grant dependence.
Farmer-First Design
Every intervention improves milk productivity, herd health, or feed cost — climate benefit is the second income, not the primary ask.
Rigorous MRV Protocols
Our methodology uses internationally-aligned measurement protocols. Every tonne claimed is a tonne documented.
Village-Scale Implementation
Operating through SHGs and Gram Panchayats gives us institutional trust that corporate programmes cannot replicate.
Indigenous Breed Advantage
Gir, Rathi, and Tharparkar cattle are naturally more methane-efficient per litre of milk than exotic breeds.
Self-Sustaining Revenue Loop
Carbon asset revenue → community feed fund → lower input cost → higher compliance → verified reductions → recurring revenue.
The numbers we're building toward.

Smallholder livestock farmers receiving climate-smart advisory through Pashu AI
The tools that make the mission possible.
Every product in Verdant's stack was built for India's smallholder context — vernacular-first, offline-capable, and economically accessible for farmers earning ₹8,000–₹15,000 per month.

- Drought-adapted nutritional profile
- Women-SHG distribution network
This isn't about carbon markets.
It's about these families.
Verdant Impact was founded in 2020 after witnessing a climate-induced mass livestock mortality event in rural Rajasthan. The farmers who lost everything that day are the reason this mission exists.
"My cattle are my bank. When I feed them better, they give more milk. Now I hear the milk might also help the environment — and pay me for it."
"We didn't know what methane was. Verdant's team explained it in a way that made sense. Now our SHG monitors the feeding schedules every week."
"The Rathi cow has survived the Thar for 500 years. She is already climate-smart. We just needed someone to tell the world that — and pay us for it."
